Cycling Around Walla Walla Washington

Another ride with BRNW! And with my ride buddies from Seattle.  This one was unique and a first for BRNW.  Based at Whitman College in Walla Walla Washington, stay in dorms (or hotels or camping if one preferred), eat sumptuous meals in the café.  Café vendor is Bon Appetit and 3 meals a day were available for purchase.  This was not cafeteria food at all! I’m not sure I rode enough to work off the calories.
We had two options for each of the five days of riding, a short ride, averaging about 32 miles, and a long ride, averaging about 50 miles.  The surrounding farms were growing grains, peas, and alfalfa mostly. No, it is not flat but the roads were very quiet and vehicles of all types, including huge farm vehicles, were considerate and respectful. BRNW recruited many local volunteers to help at rest stops and flag at some busy intersections.  It was great to meet many of them; their enthusiasm for the event was evident.
The headwinds, gusting to 40 mph one day, were miserable for a couple of days, but other than that skies were clear and temperatures comfortable.  The rolling hills seemed to go on forever.
We learned much about the history of this area including that the native Americans had been here for a few thousand years, then the farmers came and began setting up their homesteads or passed on through to Oregon City and beyond.
See the Walla Walla BRNW day by day videos on You Tube here.
I’m grateful that my old ride buddies from Seattle came together for another event, filled with laughter, fun, and camaraderie.  We’ll re unite in August for a cycling adventure in Slovenia.

Such beautiful countryside! Farm equipment is indeed huge…as are the farms are also, I suppose. The accommodations sound like the perfect place to end the day’s ride.
The mercantile must have been a fun place to stop!
